From Humble Beginnings to Stellar Heights: The Inspiring Journey of ISRO RRG, August 11, 2024August 17, 2024 The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has emerged as a global leader in space exploration, pioneering cost-efficient and innovative solutions. ISRO’s journey into space and a dream to go beyond and deeper in it is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the pursuit of scientific excellence. From its humble beginnings in the 1960s, ISRO has achieved remarkable feats, capturing the imagination of the world and inspiring generations of aspiring scientists and engineers. With that, ISRO now has the cutting-edge, or so to speak, state-of-the-art technology that can beat any other advanced space agency in the world.As for my involvement in computer technology and the space world, I am interested in learning about emerging technologies like quantum computing, cloud computing, and AI (which all would remain in my life as a way of life because when someone starts learning at the age of 39, it is quite difficult to carry on, emotionally and biologically, but I will always keep learning). And that is why I try to encourage others; in fact, I try to reach out to people from around the world—U.S.A., Germany, U.K., Japan, China, and even Russia and India—encouraging them to keep learning and cherish the pleasure of learning and studying even if you are 39 or 42.And while these technologies fascinate me, I am also drawn toward space technologies and organizations: NASA, European Space Agency, JAXA, ROSCOSMOS, CNSA, and ISRO. And with ISRO being the only affordable yet sophisticated and advanced space agency with the most cutting-edge technology, I thought of exploring this organization through my blog posts. The Genesis: ISRO Beginning Well, the roots of India’s space program can be traced back to the 1920s when Indian physicist S.K. Mitra conducted pioneering research in the field of radio physics and ionosphere. However, it was not until the 1960s that the nation’s space ambitions truly took flight. In 1962, the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) was established under the leadership of visionary scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, marking the official beginning of India’s space odyssey. Consequently, ISRO was formally established on August 15, 1969, with a modest budget and limited resources. The organization’s primary objective was to harness space technology for national development while pursuing space science research and planetary exploration. ISRO’s early days were characterized by a spirit of innovation and resourcefulness, as scientists and engineers worked tirelessly to overcome technological and financial constraints. Launching into the Deep Space: Voyage of ISRO More importantly, a significant milestone in ISRO’s journey came on April 19, 1975, when India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, was launched from the Soviet Union. This achievement marked India’s entry into the elite club of nations with space capabilities. The success of Aryabhata not only boosted the morale of the ISRO team but also garnered international recognition for India’s space program. So, as you can see, the above events were not just the ISRO humble beginnings but the start of the most robust journey. In the following decades, ISRO embarked on a series of ambitious missions, each pushing the boundaries of technological possibilities. The launch of the Rohini satellite in 1980 using India’s own SLV-3 rocket was a significant step towards self-reliance in space technology. ISRO’s prowess continued to grow with the successful development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), enabling the organization to launch satellites for various applications such as communication, remote sensing, and navigation. Lunar Triumphs and Mars Missions One of the crowning achievements of ISRO came in 2008 with the launch of Chandrayaan-1, India’s first lunar probe. This mission not only showcased India’s capability to reach beyond Earth’s orbit but also led to the groundbreaking discovery of water molecules on the Moon’s surface. The success of Chandrayaan-1 paved the way for more ambitious interplanetary missions. In 2014, ISRO made history with the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also known as Mangalyaan. India became the first nation to successfully reach Mars orbit on its maiden attempt, and that too at a fraction of the cost compared to other Mars missions. This feat earned ISRO worldwide acclaim and solidified India’s position as a major player in the global space arena. Empowering the Nation: ISRO Contribution Beyond its scientific achievements, it has played a vital role in harnessing space technology for socio-economic development. Satellite-based applications such as remote sensing, weather forecasting, communication, and navigation have transformed various sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, education, and healthcare. For example, ISRO’s satellite imagery has helped farmers optimize crop yields, monitor soil health, and plan irrigation effectively. The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), also known as NavIC, provides accurate position information, benefiting sectors such as transportation and emergency services. Additionally, telemedicine initiatives powered by ISRO’s communication satellites have brought healthcare services to remote and underserved regions of the country. Inspiring Future Generations about ISRO and Indian Space Journey As a matter of fact, the journey from humble ISRO beginning to astronomical achievements serves as an inspiration to aspiring scientists, engineers, and innovators not just for Indians but across the world. The organization’s success story is a testament to the power of vision, perseverance, and the indomitable spirit of human curiosity. As it continues to push the frontiers of space exploration, it is also nurturing the next generation of space enthusiasts through various educational initiatives and outreach programs. The Atmabirbhar Bharat policy in Space Sector and the Space Entrepreneurship growth call aims to foster a vibrant ecosystem of private industry participation, ensuring that India remains at the forefront of space innovation in the years to come catering to the services requirement to the world population.
